Joining a Faith and Work Cohort helped me through Job Anxiety

By Daphine Sagal

2025 started with a burden in my heart to look into three major areas that I wanted to grow in. “Faith, Ministry, and Work.”

The burden now was to find faithful study groups where I would get encouraged in these areas.

The first two (Faith and Ministry) got established through my local church. For a long time, I felt okay and content. Never felt the need for the third  aspect (work) to be established, and perhaps I had never heard of any community or platform that encouraged people to pursue their professions in godliness.

One fateful evening, while attending a Conscious Connections event, a relationship mentoring ministry. A friend, and fellow quantity surveyor, Leni Norah, briefly mentioned Faith and Work and promised to add me to the platform; I was already ready to plug in.

Being added to the platform didn’t push me to be intentional. I didn’t know much about it even when I heard several people in my circles speak highly of it. My time on the platform, however, got me learning through the regular information campaign along with the 20-minute Thursday prayer slot to pray for our work.

I was specifically struck by the depth of the quotations on faith and work intersection regularly shared. They felt lifting, insightful, and educative at the same time. By the start of 2026, however, my work began weighing on me. I felt so anxious and inadequate as questions about my direction emerged.

I now dreaded the career I once was so zealous about. Another evening, I saw a post by Elvis Wamboga, one of the gentlemen in my church who was part of the Bukoto Cohort; it was about the “Number Our Days Aright” Conference, which made me seek out the smaller study group for comfort and encouragement.

Following up on the post via a phone call, I got a picture of what the effort was about, and through a reference to Eddie Ssemakula, I later got connected to Allan Mugarura, the leader of the Lugogo Cohort. From then onward, I considered joining the Lugogo Cohort, where I have since enjoyed and thrived in my profession thanks to my learnings.

Looking back, I now realize that the third area I had initially overlooked (work) also needed shaping. Faith and work helped me appreciate my career as a space in which God is at work, shaping my character, teaching me dependence on Him, and giving me opportunities to serve others.

What began as a season of anxiety and inadequacy in my career has gradually become an opportunity to trust God more deeply and approach my work with purpose. Through the Lugogo Cohort, I have learned to see work not merely as a profession or a means of earning a living, but as part of God’s good design and an avenue through which I can worship Him, serve others, and exercise faithful stewardship.

I have become more intentional about excellence, integrity, accountability, and the way I respond to difficult situations at work. I am learning to bring my anxieties and frustrations before God, rather than carrying them alone because they can become opportunities to grow in patience, diligence, humility, and dependence on Christ.

I am therefore grateful that what I initially considered the “missing third area” of my growth was not something God overlooked, eventually meeting me through my cohort learnings and fellowship.
